Mogi still undefeated, will play in the Final against Bahia Basket
MALDONADO (DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana 2016) – Mogi das Cruzes topped the second Semi-Final group with 3-0 record and will play against Weber Bahia Basket at the Final of the DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana 2016.
Two teams, Hebraica Macabi and Mogi das Cruzes arrived with a perfect record to the last day of the semi-final group and the match-up between the teams determined who would go-on to play for the Horacio Muratore Cup. Mogi das Cruzes established its lead early on the game and stayed on top throughout the entire game, with great effectiveness from long range. Guerrinha’s celebrated the win after an amazing performance from Shamell Stallworth, who added 20 points.
Mogi das Cruzes started its path through the Semi-Final Phase with an 86 - 67 win over Gimnasia Comodoro of Argentina. The teams traded the lead in a competitive game throughout the first three quarters, and it was in the last ten minutes that with effective shooting Mogi dominated 26-17, to take the victory. Veteran guard Larry Taylor was the man of the match for Mogi after accumulating 22 points.
The host of the second Semi-Final group began the phase with a 79-75 win over Paulistano of Brazil. Hebraica had a better start and took control of the leaderboard early on after a 30-17 first quarter. Paulistano began to shorten the lead, but the team from Uruguay always found the way to stay ahead, and keep the victory. Jeremis Smith and Leandro Garcia Morales led the scoring for Hebraica Macabi with 21 points each.
Mogi’s next game was against fellow Brazilian club, Paulistano. It was a competitive game through three quarters, but Guerrinha’s team stepped on the gas pedal on the last ten minutes, with great effectiveness from three-point land and a suffocating defense to win the last quarter 27-9. Tyrone CUrnell was the leading man for Mogi, after accumulating 18 points and 7 rebounds in the victory.
Hebraica captured its second win of the semi-final instance over Gimnasia Comodoro 89-80. The team from Uruguay rebounded from a slow start and dominated the second half 50 – 35 to claim the victory. Once again, Lenadro Garcia Morales was the leading offensive figure for Hebraica after adding 31 points in the victory.
With their unbeaten record still intact, Mogi das Cruzes qualified to the Final and will go on to play against Weber Bahia Basket at the Final of the regional tournament.
The Final of the DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana will be played in a best of 5 playoff series with home and away games, starting on November 23 until December 7 (if necessary). The winner will celebrate with the Horacio Muratore Cup, which bears the name of the current President of the International Basketball Federation, who was a founder of the DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana in 1996.
