Japan became the fifth country to place a spacecraft on the moon after its Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (Smart) made a successful landing on Friday. Hitoshi Kuninaka, the head of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, said: ‘We are also able to confirm that the spacecraft correctly receives and responds to commands from Earth.’ However, Kuninaka said the spacecraft was unable to generate electricity due to problems with its solar panels
