The Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to two researchers for their pioneering work on machines that learn.

John Hopfield at Princeton University and Geoffrey Hinton at the University of Toronto were honored for their pioneering work on artificial neural networks that underpin much of modern artificial intelligence.

Announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, the winners share 11 million Swedish kroner (about £810,000).

The Nobel Committee said the prize was given “for fundamental discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks”.
