Regarding your main article (The Guardian’s view on women in the Catholic church: let down again, 13 October), it might be worth considering that the great defender of Catholicism, Thomas More, was included in his Utopia (1516) the following description: “Male priests are allowed to marry – for there is nothing to prevent a woman from becoming a priest, although women are not often chosen for the job, and only elderly widows are eligible come.”
